Richmond Heights Summary

Richmond Heights is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland and is located on the eastern edge of the county. The population was 10,546 at the 2010 census.

History

Richmond Heights was first settled in 1817 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was originally known as Euclid Township, but was later renamed Richmond Heights in 1872. The name was chosen to honor the town's first postmaster, John Richmond.
The town was incorporated as a village in 1921 and as a city in 1960. The city has grown steadily since then, with the population increasing from 4,000 in 1960 to 10,546 in 2010.

Geography

Richmond Heights is located at 41°31'25" North, 81°30'45" West (41.523861, -81.512599). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Richmond Heights is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Cleveland Clinic, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and the Cleveland Clinic Health System.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 10,546 people, 4,717 households, and 2,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,521.2 people per square mile (973.2/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 1,219.2 per square mile (470.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 24.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $56,944. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
