Republic Summary

Republic is a village located in Seneca County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tiffin Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Republic was first settled in 1817 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as "Crossroads" due to its location at the intersection of two major roads. In 1832, the name was changed to Republic, in honor of the newly formed United States of America.
The village was incorporated in 1837 and grew rapidly due to its location on the Sandusky and Seneca Turnpike, which connected the area to the larger cities of Tiffin and Fremont. The turnpike was later replaced by the railroad, which connected Republic to the rest of the state.

Geography

Republic is located at 41°7′17″N 83°7′17″W (41.121400, -83.121400). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Republic is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The village also has a post office and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 674.2 per square mile (260.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
