Plainfield is a village located in the northeastern part of Coshocton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Coshocton, Ohio Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The area that is now Plainfield was first settled in 1811 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as "Plainfield Station" due to its location on the Ohio and Erie Canal. The village was officially incorporated in 1837.
Geography
Plainfield is located at 40°19'25" North, 81°51'45" West (40.323750, -81.862490). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Plainfield is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The village also has a few manufacturing plants, including a plastics plant and a metal fabrication plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 517 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,619.2 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 762 housing units at an average density of 1,072.2 per square mile (413.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 0.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
