Piketon Summary
Piketon is a village located in Pike County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,181 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pike County. The village is located in the Scioto River Valley, along the banks of the Scioto River.
History
Piketon was founded in 1815 by William Lytle, a Revolutionary War veteran. The village was originally known as Lytlesburg, but was later changed to Piketon in 1817. The name is derived from the Wyandot Indian word for “place of the pike”, referring to the abundance of pike fish in the Scioto River.
The village was incorporated in 1832 and was designated as the county seat of Pike County in 1833. Piketon was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many of the local churches providing shelter and assistance to runaway slaves.
Geography
Piketon is located at 39°7′17″N 83°7′17″W (39.121400, -83.121400). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
Piketon is home to several industries, including the Piketon Nuclear Power Plant, which is owned and operated by the Ohio Valley Electric Corporation. The plant is the largest employer in the village, providing jobs for over 1,000 people.
The village is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and several restaurants.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,181 people, 845 households, and 563 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,817.5 people per square mile (700.7/km2). There were 917 housing units at an average density of 766.7 per square mile (296.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,845. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
