Parma Heights Summary
Parma Heights is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland and is part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Area. The population was 20,718 at the 2010 census.
History
Parma Heights was first settled in 1816 by Benajah Fay, who built a cabin near what is now the corner of Pearl Road and State Road. The area was originally part of Parma Township, which was formed in 1826. In 1868, the area was incorporated as Greenbriar, and in 1931 the village was renamed Parma Heights.
Geography
Parma Heights is located at 41°23′N 81°45′W (41.38, -81.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.75 square miles (22.7 km2), of which 8.73 square miles (22.6 km2) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2) is water.
Economy
Parma Heights is home to many businesses, including the headquarters of the National City Bank, the Cleveland Clinic, and the Cleveland Clinic Parma Medical Center. The city also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 20,718 people, 8,845 households, and 5,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,364.2 people per square mile (912.2/km2). There were 9,541 housing units at an average density of 1,091.2 per square mile (422.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,965, and the median income for a family was $56,813. Males had a median income of $41,890 versus $30,865 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,902. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.7% of those age 65 or over.
