Orient Summary
Orient is a small village located in Pickaway County, Ohio, United States. The village is situated along the Scioto River, approximately 20 miles south of Columbus. As of the 2010 census, the population of Orient was 1,093.
History
Orient was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as “Orientville” and was named after the Orient Iron Works, which was located nearby. The iron works was established in 1815 and was the first of its kind in the state of Ohio. The iron works was a major employer in the area and helped to spur the growth of the village.
In 1820, the village was officially incorporated as “Orient” and the first post office was established. The village continued to grow throughout the 19th century and by the turn of the century, it had become a thriving community with a population of over 1,000.
Geography
Orient is located at 39°45'45" North, 83°14'45" West (39.7625, -83.2458). The village is situated along the Scioto River and is approximately 20 miles south of Columbus. The total area of the village is 0.7 square miles, all of which is land.
Economy
The economy of Orient is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a feed mill, a sawmill, and a grain elevator. The village also has a few retail stores, including a grocery store and a hardware store.

As of the 2010 census, the population of Orient was 1,093. The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
