Newport CDP Shelby County Summary

Newport Cdp is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Shelby County, Ohio. It is situated in the southwestern part of the county, approximately 10 miles south of Sidney and 25 miles north of Dayton. The population of Newport Cdp was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Newport Cdp was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The first post office in the area was established in 1837 and was named Newport after the nearby town of Newport, Kentucky. The area was largely agricultural, with the main crops being corn, wheat, and hay.
In the late 1800s, the area began to develop into a small village. A school was built in 1891 and a church was established in 1895. The village was officially incorporated in 1902.
In the early 1900s, the village began to grow and develop. A bank was established in 1906 and a newspaper was founded in 1908. The village also had a hotel, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the 1920s, the village began to decline. The bank closed in 1923 and the newspaper ceased publication in 1925. The village was disincorporated in 1929.

Geography

Newport Cdp is located at 40°25'25"N 84°14'45"W (40.423, -84.246). The CDP has a total area of 1.3 square miles, all of which is land.

Economy

The economy of Newport Cdp is largely based on agriculture. The main crops grown in the area are corn, wheat, and hay. There are also several small businesses in the area, including a gas station, a convenience store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 517 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,420.8 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $18,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
