New Concord is a village located in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. It is situated along the Muskingum River, approximately 25 miles east of Zanesville. The population was 2,491 at the 2010 census.

History

New Concord was founded in 1828 by a group of settlers from Concord, Massachusetts. The village was originally known as Muskingum College, and was the site of Muskingum University, the first college in the state of Ohio. The village was renamed New Concord in 1837.
The village was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and was home to several prominent abolitionists, including John Brown. During the Civil War, New Concord was a major supply center for Union troops.

Geography

New Concord is located at 39°59'45"N 81°45'45"W (39.995833, -81.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

New Concord is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and several restaurants. The village is also home to Muskingum University, which is the largest employer in the area.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,491 people, 890 households, and 545 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,072.5 people per square mile (800.3/km2). There were 990 housing units at an average density of 825.0 per square mile (318.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.8% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.8% of the population.
There were 890 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 22.2% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
