New Boston Summary

New Boston is a village located in Scioto County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portsmouth, Ohio Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

New Boston was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from New England. The village was originally known as "New England" and was later changed to "New Boston" in 1820. The village was incorporated in 1837.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

New Boston is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, a bank, and a variety of restaurants. The village also has a post office, a library, and a fire department.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 668.2 per square mile (258.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.9% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.01.
