New Albany Summary
New Albany, Ohio is a city located in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Columbus, the state capital, and is located just northeast of the city. The population was 8,724 at the 2010 census.
History
New Albany was founded in 1837 by John S. Clark, a surveyor from New York. He named the city after his hometown of New Albany, Indiana. The city was incorporated in 1867.
In the early 19th century, New Albany was a small farming community. The city grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as the railroad and other transportation networks were developed. The city was home to several large manufacturing plants, including the New Albany Steel Company, which was the largest steel mill in the state.
Geography
New Albany is located at 40°3′17″N 82°49′45″W (40.054722, -82.829167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all land.
Economy
New Albany is home to a variety of businesses, including retail, manufacturing, and professional services. The city is home to several large employers, including the New Albany Steel Company, which is the largest steel mill in the state. Other major employers include the New Albany-Plain Local School District, the New Albany Country Club, and the New Albany-Plain Local Library.

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,724 people, 3,541 households, and 2,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,062.2 people per square mile (409.7/km2). There were 3,817 housing units at an average density of 463.3 per square mile (179.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 5.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $90,945, and the median income for a family was $106,945. Males had a median income of $76,945 versus $50,945 for females.
