Miller City Summary

Miller City is a village located in Putnam County, Ohio, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ottawa-Glandorf Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Miller City was founded in 1854 by John Miller, a German immigrant. Miller had purchased the land from the government and began to develop the area. He built a sawmill, gristmill, and a store. The village was originally known as Miller's Mill, but was later changed to Miller City.
The village was incorporated in 1876. In the late 19th century, Miller City was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000. It had a variety of businesses, including a hotel, a bank, a newspaper, and several stores.

Geography

Miller City is located at 41°14'17" North, 84°14'17" West (41.238, -84.238). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Miller City's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and wheat. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,817.3 people per square mile (700.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 763.3 per square mile (294.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 5.9% of those age 65 or over.
