Mentor Summary

Mentor, Ohio is a city located in Lake County, Ohio, United States. It is situated on the shores of Lake Erie, approximately 30 miles east of Cleveland. The city was founded in 1797 by James Kingsbury, a surveyor from Connecticut. The city was named after his mentor, General Moses Cleaveland. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 47,159.

Geography

Mentor is located at 41°41'25" North, 81°19'45" West (41.690278, -81.329167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.2 square miles (57.5 km2), of which 21.9 square miles (56.7 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.
The city is located on the western shore of Lake Erie, and is bordered by the cities of Willoughby, Kirtland, and Painesville. The city is also home to Mentor Marsh, a protected wetland area.

Mentor is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is home to several large employers, including the Mentor Graphics Corporation, a software company, and the Mentor Public Library.

The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 3.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 19,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $62,845. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $31,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
