The area that is now Melmore was first settled in 1817 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as “Mellon’s Mills” after the first settler, John Mellon. The village was renamed Melmore in 1837.
The village was incorporated in 1867 and was home to a variety of businesses, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office. The village also had a school, a church, and a cemetery.
