Maple Heights Summary
Maple Heights is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 23,138 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area.
History
Maple Heights was first settled in 1810 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The area was originally known as "Maple Grove" and was part of the Township of Warrensville. In 1820, the area was renamed "Maple Heights" and was incorporated as a village in 1874. The village was annexed by the City of Cleveland in 1903.
In 1915, the residents of Maple Heights voted to become an independent city. The city was officially incorporated in 1916.
Geography
Maple Heights is located at 41°25'17" North, 81°33'45" West (41.421400, -81.562545). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.
Economy
Maple Heights is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to several large employers, including the Ford Motor Company, which has a plant in the city.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 23,138 people, 8,945 households, and 6,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,521.2 people per square mile (1,749.2/km2). There were 9,521 housing units at an average density of 1,867.2 per square mile (721.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 15.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 8,945 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,845, and the median income for a family was $45,813. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $27,813 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
