Lyndhurst Summary
Lyndhurst, Ohio is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland and is part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Area. The population was 14,001 at the 2010 census.
History
Lyndhurst was first settled in 1819 by John and Sarah Brainard, who were among the first settlers in the area. The Brainards named the area after their hometown of Lyndhurst, New Jersey. The area was originally part of Mayfield Township, but was incorporated as a village in 1929. In 1951, the village was incorporated as a city.
Geography
Lyndhurst is located at 41°30′17″N 81°30′45″W (41.504722, -81.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.45 square miles (11.54 km2), all land.
Economy
Lyndhurst is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Cleveland Clinic, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and the Cleveland Clinic Health System.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 14,001 people, 6,093 households, and 3,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,145.2 people per square mile (1,210.7/km2). There were 6,541 housing units at an average density of 1,461.2 per square mile (564.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 6.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 6,093 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $63,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.7% of those age 65 or over.
