London Summary

London, Ohio is a city located in Madison County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,904 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Madison County and is located along the Mad River, approximately 45 miles (72 km) west of Columbus.

Geography

London is located at 39°53'25" North, 83°27'17" West (39.890278, -83.454722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

History

London was founded in 1811 by settlers from the Connecticut Western Reserve. The town was named after London, England, and was incorporated in 1838. The city was the site of the first county fair in the United States, held in 1810.

Economy

London is home to several major employers, including Honda of America Manufacturing, Inc., which produces automobiles and engines, and the London Correctional Institution, a state prison. Other major employers include the Madison County Board of Education, Madison County Hospital, and the London City School District.

As of the census of 2010, there were 9,904 people, 3,845 households, and 2,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,912.2 people per square mile (737.3/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 793.2 per square mile (306.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
