History

Lexington was founded in 1812 by a group of settlers from Lexington, Kentucky. The village was originally known as "Lexington Station" due to its location on the Sandusky, Mansfield and Newark Railroad. The name was changed to "Lexington" in 1817.

The village was incorporated in 1867

Economy

The economy of Lexington is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a bank.
The village is also home to several large employers, including the Mansfield Plumbing Products Company, which manufactures plumbing fixtures and fittings, and the Lexington-based Ohio Steel Foundry, which produces steel castings.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,726 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,269.2 people per square mile (876.7/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 983.3 per square mile (379.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
