Howland Center is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Howland Center was 4,719.

History

The area that is now Howland Center was first settled in the early 19th century by settlers from Connecticut. The area was originally known as Howland Township, named after the Howland family who were among the first settlers. The township was established in 1808 and was later incorporated as a village in 1874. The village was later annexed by the city of Warren in 1967.

Geography

Howland Center is located at 41°14'25"N 80°41'17"W (41.240278, -80.688056). It is situated in the northeastern corner of Trumbull County, just south of the Mahoning River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of which is land.

Economy

The economy of Howland Center is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The largest employers in the area are General Motors, Delphi Automotive, and Walmart. Other major employers include the Howland Local School District, Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities, and the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 4,719 people, 1,845 households, and 1,323 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,125.2 people per square mile (434.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,938. Males had a median income of $41,944 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
