Higginsport Summary

Higginsport is a small village located in Brown County, Ohio, United States. The village is situated along the Ohio River, approximately 25 miles east of Cincinnati. The population of Higginsport was estimated to be 545 in the 2010 census.

Geography

Higginsport is located at 39°14'25" North, 83°59'45" West (39.240278, -83.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all land.

History

Higginsport was founded in 1817 by William Higgins, a Revolutionary War veteran. The village was originally known as Higginsport, but was later changed to Higginsport in 1837. The village was incorporated in 1845.
The village was a major port on the Ohio River, and was a major stop for steamboats traveling up and down the river. The village was also a major stop for the Underground Railroad, and was a safe haven for escaped slaves.

Economy

Higginsport is a small, rural village with a limited economy. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a few other small businesses. The village also has a post office and a bank.
