History

Gratiot was first settled in 1812 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after General Charles Gratiot, a French-born American military engineer who served in the War of 1812. The town was officially incorporated in 1817.
In the early 19th century, Gratiot was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The town also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office.
