Forest Park Summary

Forest Park is a city located in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cincinnati and is part of the Cincinnati Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 18,720 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Forest Park was originally inhabited by the Shawnee Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s. The area was originally known as "Mudlick" and was part of the Symmes Purchase. In 1817, the area was renamed "Forest Park" after the nearby Forest Park Nature Preserve.
In the late 1800s, the area began to develop as a residential suburb of Cincinnati. The first post office was established in 1891 and the first school was built in 1895. The city was officially incorporated in 1961.

Geography

Forest Park is located at 39°14'25" North, 84°27'17" West (39.240278, -84.454722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Forest Park is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several industrial parks, including the Forest Park Industrial Park and the Forest Park Business Park.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 18,720 people, 7,845 households, and 4,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,611.2 people per square mile (1,395.2/km2). There were 8,541 housing units at an average density of 1,664.2 per square mile (642.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 7,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $50,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
