History
Donnelsville was founded in 1817 by William Donnel, a Revolutionary War veteran. The village was originally known as Donnel's Mills, and was later changed to Donnelsville. The village was incorporated in 1837.
In the early 19th century, Donnelsville was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several mills, including a grist mill, saw mill, and woolen mill. The village also had a blacksmith shop, a tannery, and a general store.

The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
