History
Deshler was founded in 1835 by John Deshler, a German immigrant. The village was originally known as Deshler Station, as it was a stop on the Toledo, Norwalk and Cleveland Railroad. The village was incorporated in 1867.
Geography
Deshler is located at 41°14'25" North, 83°45'45" West (41.240278, -83.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
Deshler is home to several businesses, including a manufacturing plant, a grocery store, a bank, and several restaurants. The village is also home to a branch of the Henry County Library.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 517 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (594.3/km2). There were 762 housing units at an average density of 631.2 per square mile (243.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.11% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 25.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $18,845.
