History

The area that is now Columbus Grove was first settled in 1835 by a group of settlers from Columbus, Ohio. The village was originally known as Columbus City, but was later changed to Columbus Grove. The village was incorporated in 1876.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,541 people, 590 households, and 431 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,717.2 people per square mile (664.2/km2). There were 617 housing units at an average density of 690.2 per square mile (266.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.45% White, 0.19% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.13% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.58% of the population.
There were 590 households, out of which 35.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.3% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were non-families. 25.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
