Coldstream Summary

History

The small village of Coldstream, Ohio is located in the southeastern corner of the state, in the county of Belmont. It is situated on the banks of the Ohio River, and is part of the Wheeling-Steubenville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was first settled in 1817 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania, led by John and Mary Ann Miller. The Millers named the settlement after the nearby Coldstream Creek, which was named for its cold, clear waters.
The village was officially incorporated in 1837, and the first post office was established in 1845. The village grew slowly, but steadily, and by the turn of the century, it had a population of around 500. The economy of the village was largely based on agriculture, with the main crops being corn, wheat, and hay.
In the early 1900s, the village began to experience a period of growth and development. The first bank was established in 1906, and the first telephone service was established in 1908. The village also saw the construction of a number of new businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a hotel.
The village continued to grow throughout the 20th century, and by the year 2000, the population had grown to around 1,000. The economy of the village is still largely based on agriculture, but it has also seen the development of a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
