Cleveland Heights Summary

Cleveland Heights is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is an inner-ring suburb of Cleveland, located approximately 5 miles east of downtown. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 46,121.

History

Cleveland Heights was founded in 1903 as a residential suburb of Cleveland. The area was originally part of the Warrensville Township, which was established in 1796. The township was divided into the present-day cities of Cleveland Heights, University Heights, and Shaker Heights in 1910.
The city was named after its founder, John D. Rockefeller, who purchased the land in 1903. The city was incorporated in 1921.

Geography

Cleveland Heights is located at 41°30′N 81°33′W (41.50, -81.55). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
The city is located in the eastern part of Cuyahoga County, and is bordered by the cities of University Heights to the north, Shaker Heights to the east, South Euclid to the south, and Cleveland to the west.

Economy

Cleveland Heights is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several large employers, including University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic, and Case Western Reserve University.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 46,121 people, 19,945 households, and 11,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 5,711.3 people per square mile (2,208.2/km2). There were 21,845 housing units at an average density of 2,711.3 per square mile (1,047.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% White, 33.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 19,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $56,731. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $32,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
