Clayton Summary

History

Clayton was founded in 1817 by William Clayton, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was originally known as Clay Town, but the name was changed to Clayton in 1834. The town was incorporated in 1841.
Clayton was a rural farming community until the 1950s, when it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to Dayton. The city has since become a bedroom community for Dayton, with many of its residents commuting to the city for work.

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,819 people, 3,541 households, and 2,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,711.2 people per square mile (661.2/km2). There were 3,845 housing units at an average density of 745.2 per square mile (288.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females.
