Choctaw Lake Summary
Choctaw Lake is a census-designated place located in Perry County, Ohio, United States. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state, approximately 25 miles south of Columbus. The population of Choctaw Lake was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Choctaw Lake was originally inhabited by the Shawnee and Delaware Native American tribes. The first settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s, and the town was officially founded in 1837. The town was named after the nearby Choctaw Lake, which was named after the Choctaw tribe.
The town grew slowly over the years, and by the early 1900s, it had become a popular summer resort destination. The lake was a popular spot for fishing, swimming, and boating. In the 1950s, the area began to develop into a residential community, and by the 1970s, it had become a popular retirement destination.
Geography
Choctaw Lake is located at 39°45'25"N, 82°17'45"W (39.7569, -82.2958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Choctaw Lake is largely based on tourism and retirement. The town is home to several resorts and retirement communities, as well as a number of small businesses. The town is also home to a number of farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and hay.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 441.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
The median age in the CDP was 48.2 years. About 22.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 19.2% were from 25 to 44; 33.2% were from 45 to 64; and 19.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the CDP was 48.2% male and 51.8% female.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $50,000. About 11.2% of the population was below the poverty line.
