Chardon, Ohio is a city located in Geauga County, Ohio, United States. It is the county seat of Geauga County and is located about 30 miles east of Cleveland. The population of Chardon was 5,156 at the 2010 census.

History

Chardon was founded in 1798 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was named after Chardon, Connecticut, the hometown of the settlers. The first settlers were mostly farmers and the town grew slowly. In 1807, the first post office was established and the first school was built in 1809.
In 1845, the first railroad line was built through Chardon, connecting it to Cleveland. This allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area. The railroad also brought new businesses and industries to the town, including a woolen mill, a sawmill, and a gristmill.
In 1868, the town was incorporated as a village and in 1874, it was incorporated as a city. The city continued to grow and by the early 1900s, it had become a major center for the dairy industry.

The racial makeup of the city was 96.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 2,068 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
