Canfield Summary
Canfield, Ohio is a city located in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metropolitan statistical area. The population was 7,515 at the 2010 census.
History
Canfield was founded in 1806 by John and Jacob Canfield, two brothers from Connecticut. The brothers purchased the land from the Connecticut Land Company and named the area after their family. The first settlers arrived in 1807 and the town was officially incorporated in 1837.
The town grew slowly but steadily throughout the 19th century, and by the early 20th century, it had become a popular summer resort destination for wealthy families from Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The town was also known for its mineral springs, which were believed to have healing properties.
In the 1950s, Canfield began to experience rapid growth as the city became a popular suburb of Youngstown. The population increased from 1,500 in 1950 to over 7,000 by the 2010 census.
Geography
Canfield is located at 41°7′17″N 80°37′45″W (41.121400, -80.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2), all land.

Canfield’s economy is largely based on the service industry, with many residents employed in retail, healthcare, and education. The city is also home to several small businesses, including a number of restaurants, shops, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 7,515 people, 3,072 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,788.2 people per square mile (692.2/km2). There were 3,307 housing units at an average density of 790.2 per square mile (305.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 3,072 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,917. Males had a median income of $45,917 versus $30,917 for females.
