Buffalo Summary

Buffalo, Ohio is a small village located in the southeastern corner of Logan County, Ohio. It is situated along the banks of the Mad River, approximately 10 miles east of Bellefontaine, the county seat. The village is home to approximately 1,000 people and is part of the Bellefontaine Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Buffalo was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was named after the nearby Buffalo Creek, which was named for the large number of buffalo that roamed the area. The first settlers were primarily farmers and the village quickly grew to include a post office, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a school.
In 1837, the village was incorporated and the first mayor was elected. The village continued to grow and by the late 1800s, it had become a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several mills, a creamery, a cheese factory, and a canning factory.
In the early 1900s, the village began to decline as many of the businesses closed or moved away. The population decreased and the village became a quiet, rural community.

Buffalo is located at 40°25'N, 83°51'W (40.4167, -83.85). The village is situated along the banks of the Mad River and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The village is located approximately 10 miles east of Bellefontaine, the county seat, and approximately 50 miles northwest of Columbus, the state capital.
The village has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of which is land. The village is located in the humid continental climate zone and experiences four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid, while winters are cold and snowy.
