History

Brunswick was founded in 1815 by John M. Ellsworth, a surveyor from Connecticut. The city was named after the German city of Braunschweig, which was the ancestral home of the House of Hanover. The city was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Brunswick was a major center for the production of cigars. The city was home to several cigar factories, including the Brunswick Cigar Company, which was founded in 1887. The company was one of the largest cigar manufacturers in the United States and employed hundreds of people.

The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 13,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
