Brooklyn Summary

Brooklyn, Ohio is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland and is part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 11,169.

History

The area that is now Brooklyn was first settled in 1810 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The settlement was originally known as Mechanicsville, but was later renamed Brooklyn after the town of Brooklyn, Connecticut. The town was officially incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Brooklyn was a popular summer resort for wealthy Clevelanders. The town was home to several large hotels, including the Brooklyn Hotel, which was built in 1876 and was one of the largest hotels in the state at the time.
In the early 20th century, Brooklyn began to experience rapid growth as a result of its proximity to Cleveland. The town was annexed by the city of Cleveland in 1910, and the population increased from 1,500 to over 10,000 by the 1950s.

Geography

Brooklyn is located at 41°25′N 81°37′W (41.4133, -81.6167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
The city is located on the western edge of Cuyahoga County, and is bordered by Cleveland to the north, Parma to the east, and Middleburg Heights to the south. The city is located on the banks of the Cuyahoga River, and is part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Economy

Brooklyn is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is home to several large employers, including the Cleveland Clinic, which is the largest employer in the city. Other major employers include the Cleveland Metroparks, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and the Cleveland Clinic Health System.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 11,169 people, 4,845 households, and 2,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,664.2 people per square mile (1,027.2/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 1,213.2 per square mile (468.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 4,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
