Avon Summary

Avon, Ohio is a city located in Lorain County, Ohio, United States. The city is situated on the eastern edge of the Cleveland metropolitan area and is part of the Greater Cleveland Combined Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 21,193.

History

Avon was first settled in 1814 by John Reed, a veteran of the War of 1812. The city was originally known as Reed's Corners, but was later renamed Avon in 1837 after the Biblical city of Avon in England. The city was incorporated in 1960.

Geography

Avon is located at 41°24'17" North, 82°1'45" West (41.404722, -82.029167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Avon is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is home to the headquarters of the Avon Products Corporation, a global manufacturer and marketer of beauty and related products. Other major employers in the city include the Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital, the Avon Lake City School District, and the Avon Lake Public Library.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 21,193 people, 8,072 households, and 5,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,912.3 people per square mile (737.2/km2). There were 8,521 housing units at an average density of 767.3 per square mile (296.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 8,072 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,845. Males had a median income of $51,845 versus $36,945 for females.
