Ansonia Summary
Ansonia is a village located in Darke County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville, Ohio Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Ansonia was founded in 1837 by Anson and Mary Ann Smith. The village was named after Anson Smith, who was a veteran of the War of 1812. The village was incorporated in 1845.
Ansonia was a major stop on the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railroad, which ran through the village from 1851 to 1971. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the village, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.
Geography
Ansonia is located at 40°17'17" North, 84°41'45" West (40.288, -84.695). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.
Economy
Ansonia's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including the Smith Family Farm, which has been in operation since 1837. The village also has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 431 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,817.2 people per square mile (701.2/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 772.2 per square mile (297.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
