Delaware County Summary

Delaware County, Pennsylvania is located in the southeastern corner of the state and is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. It is the fifth most populous county in Pennsylvania, with a population of 558,979 as of the 2010 census. The county seat is Media, and the largest city is Chester.

History

Delaware County was formed in 1789 from part of Chester County. It was named after the Delaware River, which forms its eastern border. The county was originally part of the Province of Pennsylvania, and was part of the original three counties of Pennsylvania.
The county was home to many prominent figures in American history, including William Penn, who founded Pennsylvania in 1681. The county was also home to the first paper mill in the United States, which was established in 1719.

Geography

Delaware County is located in the southeastern corner of Pennsylvania, and is bordered by Philadelphia County to the north, Montgomery County to the west, Chester County to the southwest, and New Castle County, Delaware to the south and east. The county covers an area of 191 square miles, and is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern and western parts of the county.
The county is drained by the Delaware River, which forms its eastern border, and by the Schuylkill River, which forms its western border. The county is home to several parks, including Ridley Creek State Park, John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, and Tyler Arboretum.

Delaware County has a diverse economy, with a mix of manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The county is home to several major employers, including Boeing, Sunoco, and the Philadelphia International Airport.

As of the 2010 census, Delaware County had a population of 558,979. The racial makeup of the county was 79.3% White, 14.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.7% Asian, and 3.5% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
The median household income in the county was $60,879, and the median family income was $71,919. The per capita income was $30,945. About 8.7% of the population was below the poverty line.
Delaware County is home to a large number of immigrants, with about 15.3% of the population being foreign-born. The largest ancestry groups in the county are Irish (17.3%), German (14.7%), Italian (10.2%), and Polish (7.2%).
