Spring House Summary

House, PA is a small borough located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It is situated approximately 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia and is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The population of Spring House was 2,845 at the 2000 census.

History

The area that is now Spring House was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The area was originally known as “Springhouse”, named after a natural spring located in the area. The spring was used by the settlers for drinking water and for powering a grist mill.
In 1743, the area was officially incorporated as a borough. The borough was named after the spring, and the name was eventually shortened to “Spring House”. The borough was primarily an agricultural community, with the main crops being wheat, corn, and oats.
In the late 19th century, the borough began to experience a period of growth and development. The Pennsylvania Railroad built a station in the borough in 1876, which helped to spur economic growth. The borough also became a popular summer resort destination, with many wealthy Philadelphians building summer homes in the area.

Geography

Spring House is located at 40°14'17" North, 75°14'45" West (40.238, -75.246). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.9 square miles, all of it land.
