Prospect Park Summary

Prospect Park is a borough located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,454 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

Geography

Prospect Park is located at 39°54'45" North, 75°17'45" West (39.912500, -75.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Prospect Park was founded in 1891 by a group of Philadelphia businessmen who wanted to create a suburban community. The borough was incorporated in 1895. The name of the borough was derived from the fact that the area was once a popular spot for picnics and other outdoor activities.

Economy

The economy of Prospect Park is largely based on the service industry. The borough is home to a variety of restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses. The borough also has a number of industrial and manufacturing businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,717 people, 2,717 households, and 1,717 families residing in the borough. The population density was 9,717.3 people per square mile (3,744.2/km2). There were 2,845 housing units at an average density of 4,093.2 per square mile (1,578.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 79.2% White, 14.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 2,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,964, and the median income for a family was $50,902. Males had a median income of $35,921 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
