Lima Summary
Lima is a borough located in the state of Pennsylvania, United States. It is located in the northwestern corner of the state, in the county of Lancaster. The population of Lima was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Lima was first settled in 1737 by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Lime”, but the name was changed to Lima in 1820. The town was incorporated in 1845.
The town was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many of the town’s residents helping to hide and transport escaped slaves.
Geography
Lima is located at 40°17'17" North, 76°17'17" West (40.288, -76.288). It is situated in the northwestern corner of the state, in the county of Lancaster.
The borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of which is land. It is bordered by the boroughs of Mount Joy and Manheim to the north, and the townships of East Hempfield and West Hempfield to the east and south, respectively.
Economy
Lima’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including the historic Koser Farm, which has been in operation since the late 1700s.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including a hardware store, a bakery, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,072.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,845. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
