Eddington Summary

Eddington, Pennsylvania is a small borough located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. It is situated on the Delaware River, just north of Philadelphia. The population of Eddington was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Eddington was first settled in the late 17th century by English Quakers. The town was originally known as “Eddington’s Landing” and was a major port for the shipping of goods between Philadelphia and New York City. In 1776, the town was officially incorporated as Eddington.
In the 19th century, Eddington was a major center for the production of paper and textiles. The town was also home to several mills, including the Eddington Paper Mill, which was the largest paper mill in the United States at the time.

Geography

Eddington is located at 40°7′17″N 75°7′17″W (40.1214, -75.1214). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Eddington’s economy is largely based on the service industry. The town is home to several restaurants, bars, and retail stores. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including a local newspaper, a printing company, and a real estate agency.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in Eddington. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,011.3/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
