Womelsdorf Borough is a small borough located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern part of the county, about 10 miles northwest of Reading. The borough is part of the Reading, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Womelsdorf was 2,521.

History

Womelsdorf was founded in 1762 by John Womelsdorf, a German immigrant. The borough was originally known as Womelsdorf’s Town, and was incorporated in 1864. The town was named after its founder, and the name was later shortened to Womelsdorf.
The borough was an important stop on the Reading Railroad, which ran through the town from 1842 to 1976. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.
The borough was also home to several industries, including a paper mill, a brickyard, and a tannery. These industries provided employment for many of the town’s residents.

Geography

Womelsdorf is located at 40°20'17"N 75°59'45"W (40.338, -75.996). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the Schuylkill River watershed. The Schuylkill River forms the northern boundary of the borough, and the Tulpehocken Creek forms the southern boundary.

The economy of Womelsdorf is largely based on agriculture and light industry. The borough is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.8% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. There were 1,039 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
