White Oak borough Summary

White Oak Borough is a small borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the eastern part of the county, just south of the city of Pittsburgh. The borough is bordered by the boroughs of McKeesport, North Versailles, and Wilmerding, as well as the townships of Elizabeth and Versailles. The population of White Oak Borough was 8,845 at the 2010 census.

History

White Oak Borough was originally part of Elizabeth Township, which was established in 1788. The area was first settled in the late 1700s by German and Scots-Irish immigrants. The first post office in the area was established in 1817, and the first school was built in 1820. The area was known as White Oak Flats, and the name was changed to White Oak Borough in 1867.
The borough was an important industrial center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Pennsylvania Railroad had a major presence in the area, and the borough was home to several steel mills, coal mines, and other industries. The borough was also home to several large retail stores, including the White Oak Department Store, which opened in the early 1900s.

White Oak Borough is located at 40°21'17" North, 79°50'45" West (40.354722, -79.845833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the Monongahela River Valley, and is bordered by the boroughs of McKeesport, North Versailles, and Wilmerding, as well as the townships of Elizabeth and Versailles. The borough is located approximately 10 miles (16 km) southeast of downtown Pittsburgh.

White Oak Borough is a primarily residential community, with a small commercial district. The borough is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. As of the 2010 census, there were 8,845 people, 3,717 households, and 2,521 families residing in the borough. The population density was 7,323.3 people per square mile (2,827.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 87.2% White, 8.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $26,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $19,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
