History

The area that is now Whitaker Borough was first settled in the late 1700s by German immigrants. The area was originally known as “Whitaker’s Settlement”, named after the first settler, John Whitaker. The area was officially incorporated as a borough in 1872.
In the late 1800s, the borough was a thriving industrial center, with several steel mills and other factories located in the area. The steel mills provided employment for many of the residents of the borough. The steel industry declined in the early 1900s, and the borough’s economy shifted to a more service-oriented economy.

Geography

Whitaker Borough is located in the eastern part of Allegheny County, just north of the city of Pittsburgh. The borough is bordered by the boroughs of Wilkinsburg, Rankin, and Swissvale, as well as the city of Pittsburgh. The borough is situated on the Allegheny River, and is located in the Allegheny Plateau region of Pennsylvania.
The borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land. The borough is located in the Eastern Standard Time Zone.
