West York borough Summary

West York Borough is a borough located in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,617 at the 2010 census. It is part of the York-Hanover Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

West York Borough was incorporated in 1918 from the western portion of the borough of York. The area was first settled in the early 1700s by German immigrants. The borough was originally known as North York, but the name was changed to West York in 1881.

Geography

West York Borough is located at 39°58'45"N 76°44'45"W (39.979167, -76.745833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

West York Borough is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The borough is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including York Barbell Company, which produces weightlifting equipment, and York Wallcoverings, which produces wallpaper.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,619 people, 2,039 households, and 1,179 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,845.2 people per square mile (1,485.2/km2). There were 2,150 housing units at an average density of 1,788.2 per square mile (690.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.17% White, 0.78% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.87% of the population.
There were 2,039 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.7% were non-families. 37.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.7 males.
