West Newton borough Summary
Newton Borough is a small borough located in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southwestern corner of the county, approximately 20 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The borough is bordered by the townships of North Huntingdon, Hempfield, and Rostraver. The population of Newton Borough was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Newton Borough was first settled in the late 1700s by German and Scotch-Irish immigrants. The first settler in the area was John Miller, who arrived in 1790. The area was originally known as Millerstown, and the first post office was established in 1817. The name was changed to Newton in 1820, in honor of the Revolutionary War hero, General John Newton.
The borough was officially incorporated in 1845. At the time, the main industries in the area were farming and coal mining. The coal industry was particularly important, and the borough was home to several coal mines. The coal industry declined in the early 20th century, and the borough shifted to a more residential focus.

Newton Borough is located at 40°17'45" North, 79°41'45" West (40.295833, -79.695833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of it land.
The borough is located in the southwestern corner of Westmoreland County, and is bordered by the townships of North Huntingdon, Hempfield, and Rostraver. The borough is located approximately 20 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

The economy of Newton Borough is largely based on the service industry. The borough is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The borough is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a steel mill and a paper mill.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile. There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,155.7 per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
