History

West Fairview is a borough located in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. It is part of the Harrisburg-Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area. The borough was incorporated in 1891 and is located along the Susquehanna River. The area was first settled in the late 1700s by German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Fairview” but was changed to “West Fairview” in 1891 to distinguish it from the nearby borough of East Fairview.
The town was a major hub for the Pennsylvania Canal, which ran through the area in the early 1800s. The canal was a major transportation route for goods and people, and it helped to spur the growth of the town. The canal was eventually replaced by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the late 1800s.
