Volant borough Summary

History

Volant Borough was founded in 1832 by a group of settlers from New England. The settlers were attracted to the area by the abundance of natural resources, including timber, coal, and iron ore. The town was named after the French word for “flying”, as the settlers believed that the area was a good place to fly kites.

The first industry in Volant was a sawmill, which was built in 1833. This was followed by a gristmill, a tannery, and a woolen mill. The town also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office.

In the late 19th century, Volant became a popular tourist destination. The town was known for its picturesque scenery and its abundance of outdoor activities, such as fishing, hunting, and camping.

Geography

Volant Borough is located in the Shenango Valley, approximately 30 miles north of Pittsburgh. The borough is situated on the banks of the Shenango River, which flows through the town. The borough is surrounded by the townships of Wilmington, Neshannock, and Slippery Rock.

The borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of which is land. The elevation of the borough is 890 feet above sea level.
