History

Valley View Cdp was first settled in the early 19th century by German immigrants. The area was originally known as “Valley View” due to its location in a valley surrounded by hills. The first post office was established in 1845 and the first school was built in 1848. The area was officially incorporated as a borough in 1872.

In the late 19th century, Valley View Cdp was a thriving coal mining community. The coal industry provided employment for many of the residents and the town was home to several coal mines. The coal industry declined in the early 20th century and the town’s population began to decline.
