Tyrone borough Summary

Tyrone Borough is a borough located in Blair County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Altoona, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,085 at the 2010 census.

History

Tyrone Borough was founded in 1851 by John B. Johnston, a local landowner. The town was named after the ancient kingdom of Tyrone in Ireland. The town was incorporated in 1857.
Tyrone was a major railroad hub in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Pennsylvania Railroad and the Tyrone and Clearfield Railroad both had stations in the town. The Tyrone and Clearfield Railroad was built in 1871 and ran from Tyrone to Clearfield, Pennsylvania. The railroad was used to transport coal and other goods.
The town was also home to several industries, including a glass factory, a brickyard, and a tannery. The glass factory was established in 1872 and produced bottles and jars. The brickyard was established in 1876 and produced bricks for the construction of buildings in the area. The tannery was established in 1883 and produced leather goods.

Tyrone Borough is located at 40°41'25" North, 78°14'45" West (40.690278, -78.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Tyrone Borough is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, a bank, and several restaurants. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a machine shop.

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,085 people, 1,717 households, and 1,072 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,400.7 people per square mile (1,312.2/km2). There were 1,845 housing units at an average density of 1,527.5 per square mile (590.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 1,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $31,944, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845.
