Thornburg borough Summary

Thornburg Borough is a small borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southwestern corner of the county, just north of the city of Pittsburgh. The borough is bordered by the boroughs of Carnegie and Crafton, and the townships of Robinson and Collier. The population of Thornburg Borough was 2,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Thornburg Borough was founded in 1876 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Crafton. The settlers named the borough after the nearby Thornburg Creek, which was named after the family of William Thornburg, who had settled in the area in the late 1700s. The borough was incorporated in 1877 and was originally part of Robinson Township.

Geography

Thornburg Borough is located at 40°22'45" North, 80°7'45" West (40.379167, -80.129028). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Thornburg Borough is a primarily residential community, with no major industries or businesses located within its borders. The borough is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.20.
